This THINK. session will discuss the causes of political extremism, radicalisation, hate crime, and highlight the campaigning strategies being undertaken to fight against them. Britain is currently experiencing a worrying spike in political violence, and in hate crimes driven by race, religion or gender identity following the Brexit referendum, recent terror attacks, and a coarsening public discourse. Our two speakers are Owen Jones, a representative of Hope not Hate, a longstanding campaigning organisation which uses research, education, and public engagement to challenge mistrust and racism, and helps to build communities that are inclusive, celebrate shared identities, and are resilient to hate; and Isobel Kingscott, Head of Policy and Research at MEND, (Muslim Engagement and Development), a not-for-profit company that helps to empower and encourage British Muslims within local communities to be more actively involved in British media and politics, and which is particularly active in the fight against Islamophobia in Britain.
