The week offers a mix of high standard sailing tuition with a fun, educational environment for young people. Young people will learn to work and live together as a crew whilst sailing and looking after the boat. They will learn how to helm; use the compass; read charts and use basic navigation skills to plan passages; put the sails up and down and tie some of the most important knots; how to cook and keep the boat ship shape. For those new to sailing they can achieve a Level 1 RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Competent Crew certificate. Those who already have their Competent Crew can work on the RYA Watchleader level. The Island Trust instructors are specialised youth workers, RYA qualified sailing instructors and CRB checked every year. The voyages often take them to different places, exploring harbours, rivers and coast.

They will learn about anchoring and mooring, as well as how to row a dinghy. Barbecues and trips ashore are part of the fun of sailing and discovering new places. This course also qualifies for the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Residential. They supply good quality sailing waterproofs and all food onboard is included. For more info contact Zena at HESW.
