or, -- How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Hate the Fascists -- How does the far-right operate in our cultural and intellectual spaces and how do we stop it? The new far right represents a complex movement and has many internal currents and components. Starting from the campaign to shut down a fascist art gallery in Dalston, Hackney, earlier this year, this talk will explain the particularities of the far right's intellectual and cultural wing. It will provide a preliminary account of how that tendency presents itself, of what its motives are, and of how it relates to a larger tendency (both electoral-nativist and openly neo-Nazi) that in its own propaganda exercises it appears to talk down to or openly to disdain. It will offer an account of why this tendency is particularly drawn towards cultural institutions and universities, and of what it hopes to achieve once it squeezes itself into them; and it will present an overview of the ways in which that process of entry can be blocked off and opposed.

We'll also try to open a wider discussion about the nature of a contemporary anti-fascist culture. We reject the false and damaging thesis that the new far right derives from or has in some sense been produced by the failings of the radical left. But what principles do we need to infuse into our cultural activity, and what purposes can be defined there, in order to prevent a middle-class 'cultural' fascism from continuing to make incremental gains? How can our own cultural work help to draw more people into movements based on social solidarity and anti-racism? Accessibility: This is on the Middle Floor, up a flight of steps, with two steep steps into the room. If you do have any accessibility requirements, do get in touch and we will do our best to make them happen.

NB: This is on the Middle Room, up a flight of stairs, not the Ground Floor as first advertised. Apologies.
