Mudra and Mantra On the last Friday of each month throughout 2017 there is a Mudra and Mantra class at Mayura Yoga at 7.45pm with Michelle Bappoo. Mudra is a hand or body position, a gesture, which is held for a prescribed amount of time, it works on the subtle body; the meridians and pressure points within the hands are stimulated in order to promote health and well-being in specific areas. In tantric yoga practice, these mudras are combined with Pranayama (breath work) and Mantra (chanting). Mantra literally means ‘revealed sound’ and is the practice of repeating words or sounds in order to achieve a single point focus with the mind; this is dharana, one of the eight limbs of ashtanga yoga. Dharana means focusing the mind on a single point. This practice is a form of meditation, which allows us to withdraw from our senses (pratyahara), and move towards a higher state of awareness.
Mantra can be a very powerful form of healing. In the class you will learn about various mudras, their meanings and purpose and enjoy the relaxation, focus and joy that mantra can bring to the body and mind. Entry £8
