HRC Speaker Series- Story of Calais: accounts of refugees and NGO workers Human Rights Centre Speaker Series | Wednesday 21 February | 14:15 - 15:45 | Human Rights Centre Seminar Room, 5S.6.25 This talk will explore issues arising from the Calais refugee crisis, from the perspective of refugees and NGO workers based in Colchester. The talk will both highlight the challenges facing refugees entering Calais, and present ways forward to support local efforts to address the crisis. Speakers: Suhaib is a young Syrian refugee who currently resides in Colchester. Suhaib spent months in Calais before entering the UK. Iman Mortagy is one of the directors and caseworkers at Refugee Action Colchester. During her career as a Social Scientist, specialising in health research, she has worked in the Middle East for Save the Children/USA, the United Nations HIV/AIDS Programme and then later in London for a national charity working in maternal and child health.

Eve Pereira is a retired Maths teacher, she was a Senior Tutor at Tower Hamlet FE College in Poplar. Eve teaches English to local refugees through Essex Integration and is a great supporter of Refugee Action-Colchester. She has recently returned from her first trip to Calais with a small team from Refugee Action-Colchester and Brightlingsea Refugee Support Network. Kate Khan is one of the directors and the event, fundraising and volunteer coordinator at Refugee Action Colchester. Kate also works for Colchester Borough Council in the Communities Department.
