The campaign for the vote was just one of the fronts on which the fight for female emancipation raged in the later 19th and early 20th centuries. Women also called for equal access to a range of other privileges traditionally the preserve of men – while doctors, scientists and the clergy added their voices to the fray in an attempt to define woman’s ‘true nature’ and ‘natural role’. This lecture will consider Victorian and Edwardian debates about the ‘proper’ roles of the sexes and ask how far these issues still inform thinking about femininity and masculinity today.
