Technical Lecture of the IMarEST South East England & London Home Counties Branch, presented by Sen Abhayasinghe, CEng CMarEng FIMarEST Group Technical Authority DP Services, London Offshore Consultants Limited Abstract The purpose of Dynamic Positioning systems (DP) is to enable a vessel or a rig at sea to maintain a predetermined geographical position and heading over the seabed using its propulsion and/or thruster systems to generate thrusts that nullify the effects of environmental forces predominantly wind, current and wave actions. DP System enables position and orientation of a DP asset, whether fixed or moving, to be safely and accurately controlled. For certain offshore operations, it is required to maintain position of a DP asset continuously for certain period even after a fault in any DP associated system to mitigate the risk of damage to lives and assets.

Ability to maintain position continuously and accurately after a fault in a system is dependent upon the availability of thrust power and control systems, and the state of environmental forces under which the vessel is being operated. The presentation will address the concept of Dynamic Position, its application and modes of system failures and their effects. Speaker Sen Abhayasinghe is a Charted Marine and Electrical Engineer and a Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineering Science & Technology. Sen is working with London Offshore Consultants as Group Technical Authority DP Services. He has worked in the marine industry over 35 years, with 18 years of DP related experience covering a variety of management and engineering positions. Prior to LOC he worked as regional DP manager for DNVGL Noble Denton covering Middle East, India and Africa, and as a senior engineer for ABS in London. Sen has extensive experience as a marine electrical and electronics engineer and ship building during his tenure with Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. He is also a professional review interviewer of IMarEST in assessing candidates for suitability of Chartered and Incorporated Engineers.
