Walthamstow Rock 'n' Roll Book Club are delighted to host this special event to mark the publication of Hacienda resident DJ Dave Haslam’s new book; entitled 'Sonic Youth Slept on My Floor; Music, Manchester & More', a memoir of his life and work in some of the most interesting corners of contemporary culture. Journalist and broadcaster Miranda Sawyer will be hosting the event, and interviewing Dave Haslam. After an audience Q&A, the evening will conclude with a book signing and music courtesy of E17 based Disco 2000. In his new book, Haslam documents encounters with inspiring characters including Tony Wilson, Nile Rodgers, Terry Hall, Neneh Cherry, Tracey Thorn, John Peel, Mark E Smith, Ian Brown, and John Lydon. Morrissey comes to tea; he meets writers including Raymond Carver and Jonathan Franzen; he discusses masturbation with Viv Albertine; he has a gun pulled on him at the Hacienda, a drug dealer threatens to slit his throat; and Sonic Youth sleep on his floor.
In the late 1970s, he was a teenage John Peel listener and Joy Division fan. In 2017, four decades later, he works with New Order on a series of five live shows in Manchester. Haslam tells the story of those decades, including the impact of life-shaking events (from the nightmare of the Yorkshire Ripper to the shock of the Manchester Arena terror attack). It’s a masterful insider account of the Hacienda, the rise of Madchester and the birth of the rave era. And so much more... He has since DJ'd worldwide, including Paris, Detroit, Berlin, New York, Lima, Geneva; and at afterparties for New Order, Gorillaz, and Depeche Mode. His journalism has appeared in 'NME', 'Les Inrocks' (France), ‘The Guardian, ‘The New Statesman’, and the ‘London Review of Books’. ‘Sonic Youth Slept on My Floor’ is his fifth book. This is Dave's second visit to Walthamstow to talk about his books. We like Dave and love his books. Come and join us.
