In June we saw the horrific acid attack on Resham Khan and Jameel Muhktar by a far-right racist in Beckton. Muslim women are the foremost victims of Islamophobic attacks. Women who wear the hijab, veil or robe are disproportionally targeted by racists. So it was a shock when a Newham school, St Stephen’s Primary in East Ham, banned the choice of headscarf, initially for under-8s. St Stephen’s has now withdrawn the ban; however the Chief Inspector of Schools, Amanda Spielman, is still promoting bans in schools. This can only divide our schools and communities and fuel Islamophobia. Far-right and fascist organisations are growing, here and across Europe. Islamophobia and racism are a threat to us all; we must not let racism divide us. We need to unite against Islamophobia, racism and antisemitism. We need to oppose attempts to discriminate within our schools and institutions. Come to this important meeting and help launch a broad campaign to unite our community against Islamophobia and racism.
