SESSION TITLE DETech | Responsible Research and Innovation PRESENTER Dr Garfield Benjamin ABOUT THIS SESSION Technology has been causing problems: data misuse, environmental destruction, exacerbating inequality. Society has been slow react, but there is an increasing call for responsible research and innovation. But this remains a difficult and contested topic that can be difficult to put into practice. Integrating ethics with technology research will be increasingly important, and we need to find interdisciplinary ways of incorporating these debates for researchers and students. We will approach some of the following questions: -        What is technology ethics? -        Whose ethics? -        Whose responsibility is it? -        Why can’t we simply have fixed concrete procedures? -        (How) Can we design research for responsible innovation? We will then explore some approaches to framing discussions of responsible innovation and research, drawing on examples including technology ethics, speculative design, and new research into the need for ‘abnormative ethics’.

We will conclude with discussion between participants drawing on experiences and potential ethical dilemmas from their own research. ABOUT THE DETECH RESEARCH GROUP DETech is a multidisciplinary research group at Solent University, that explores the emergent fields in design, engineering and technology to enable a healthier, more socially connected, creative living. DETech brings together researchers from different backgrounds across Solent to discuss and address fundamental problems and issues around the use and application of technologies.
