Talking Practice is delighted to welcome Giulia Savino and Arianna Caressa from the Jewelry Design Department at Instituto Europeo di Deisgn to introduce their institution, work and students. Please join us for an informal lunchtime talk, and an opportunity to ask questions and to speak with Giulia and Arianna afterwards. 1245-1315hrs | Thurs 28 March | School of Jewellery Lecture Theatre Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) was founded in 1966 in Milan by Francesco Morelli. For more than fifty years, the IED has been operating in the fields of education and research across the disciplines of design, fashion, visual communication and management. The Jewelry Design Department at IED Milan fosters a complete and cross-disciplinary education in the contemporary jewelry field.

The complex scenario is embraced by opening a dialogue between two apparently distant realities: an intimate and experimental approach and company-oriented design, both fundamental for jewelry designers. The IED approach – based on learning by doing and project culture – provides a balanced mixture of goldsmith skills, design methodology and experimental research. Students are encouraged to combine tradition and innovation, considering themselves and their personal stories and experience as a precious and unique narrative resource, capable to build their future identity as designers. During their path, they may profit from different design approaches under the guidance of a faculty of professionals, trained with specific skills in their areas of expertise.
Furthermore, collaborations with galleries, international competitions and events offer the possibility for students to take the first steps in the professional environment.   Giulia Savino, Course Co-ordinator Giulia Savino is an italian jewelry designer and maker with an international and multicultural background and experience in jewelry design processes, jewelry making and exhibiting. She holds a Masters in Contemporary Jewelry and Body Ornament from Alchimia Jewelry School in Florence, where she was mentored by Belgian designer Nedda El Asmar. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design from Politecnico di Milano. For three years, Giulia lived in Cairo, where she contributed to the setting and opening of the Middle East’s first ever jewelry school, set up by the pioneer and award-winning designer Azza Fahmy – ‘The Design Studio by Azza Fahmy’.
While there, she worked as a teacher and an assistant to the director Estela Saez. Her work is focused on the project 1:20.000, a collection of maps in shape of jewels. 1:20.000 was exhibited in her first solo show in Turin at Officina 500, later in Melbourne at Bini Gallery and has been at exhibitions around the world. Arianna Caressa, Course Assistant Arianna Caressa graduated in Jewelry Design at IED Milan.
