PLEASE ENSURE YOU HAVE READ ALL INFORMATION CAREFULLY BEFORE BOOKING A PLACE An outstandingly popular two-day basic level course covering the basics of throwing using Shimpo Whisper potter’s wheels. On the first day you will learn to wedge, knead, centre and throw. Jon will show you the basic techniques needed for different thrown forms such as cylinders, vases, bowls and platters. You will learn how to  apply pattern directly to the thrown surface and how different hand tools can be used effectively for this purpose. On the second day you will learn to 'turn' and refine your leatherhard pots using various hand tools. After 29 years of working for Wedgwood, Jon French is now running his own business from the historic surroundings of Middleport Pottery. He has demonstrated the skills and gift of a master craftsman to department stores such as Harrods, London and department stores all over Japan including Mitsukoshi, Takashimaya and Isetan over the last 20 years.

He has worked and demonstrated across Europe and also the Middle East, Far East, China, Taiwan, Australia, the Caribbean and on the Queen Elizabeth II cruise ship. Items to bring: Towel, apron, your own named tools and wheelbats if you have them, notepad, pen, means of getting your work home (e.g. cardboard crate) Included: Tool kit worth over £57*, course materials, lunch, refreshments, preferential discounts against all of our products. *Basic Throwing tool kit contains a cutting wire, potter's needle, wooden rib, Mudtools flexible rib, metal kidney, angled sponge, six assorted ribbon/strip tools, and two 14" wheelbats. We reserve the right to make appropriate replacements of the same or higher value according to product availability. This tool set has been devised in collaboration with the course tutor.
We regret we cannot accommodate requests for tool swaps. Other tools will be available to purchase from our showrooms, or please bring your own named equipment as stated above. IMPORTANT INFORMATION Food allergies must be notified at time of booking. Our caterers will do their best to accommodate your needs but in rare circumstances we may need to ask you to bring your own food for a small fee rebate in the form of a Potclays gift voucher. Book early to avoid disappointment. This is a very popular course and due to the intensive nature of the tuition, places are restricted to a maximum of 10.  Please look out for an email in the week prior to the course - it will contain important information so please ensure [email protected] is added to your email 'safe list'.
Photography and filming takes place at all Potclays events. Material may be used publicly on social media and in Potclays marketing activity. If you have any concerns, please speak to a member of staff.  There may be an opportunity during our 2 and 3 day courses to attend a factory tour (45-60mins) giving a unique insight into how Potclays clay is made. This tour will be entirely optional. Our factory is a very old and rambling building (it was a Victorian teapot factory in a former life) and access to our classroom, WC’s and upper showroom is only made possible through the use of temporary ramps. Please speak to us before booking a course place or visiting us so we can discuss how to best meet your needs. LUNCH AT POTCLAYS COURSES & WORKSHOPS Lunch will consist of a buffet prepared by The Quarter café in Piccadilly, Hanley.
