Breaking Silence A Community Conversation

Breaking the Silence –  A Community Conversation When: Sunday 24rd March 2018, 3pm – 5.30pm Where: What was formerly Ort Cafe (500 Moseley Road, Balsall Heath, Moseley Road, B12 9AH) Refreshments provided We invite you to join us in a conversation around the themes and questions that arise from the production of The Silence. How do communities become 'suspect', and how can we counter mass blame? How can we break the silence between communities and across generations about the experience of being suspect communities? The Silence is a new drama production by The GAP’s Basement Theatre Ensemble. The Silence is an immersive, intimate theatre piece that explores the ramifications of mass blame through the eyes of a young Irish woman in 1976, two years after the Birmingham Pub Bombings which put Irish people under suspicion, and through those of a young Muslim man in 2017, shortly after the Westminster Bridge attacks which further intensified Islamophobia.

The Silence is a new play about identity, suppression and the need to talk. It’s a play about how silence can fracture communities, about the difference between suppression and repression, and importantly, it’s a local story which asks universal questions. Among those joining in the conversation are:  Moazzam Begg (held in extrajudicial detention by the US government in Guantanamo Bay for three years, 2002-5), Chris Cooper (playwright of The Silence) and Professor Gavin Schaffer (Senior Lecturer in British History at the University of Birmingham and leading researcher into 'Suspect Communities') and brap (a national community action based charity organisation). To get the most out of the event we encourage you to view a performance of The Silence. Get tickets following the link below, with discounted tickets for students and u25’s available.
