The Wisdom Contemplative Master Fr Thomas Keating

Mondays, 5.45 to 7.15, from 21 January to 11 March In this 8-week facilitated group we will explore the 42 guidelines set out in Fr Thomas Keating's classic text ‘Open Mind, Open Heart’, through short reflections and a group practice of lectio divina to open ourselves to a contemplative transmission of these wisdom teachings. Lectio divina is an ancient monastic practice of ‘divine reading’ – engaging with spiritual and sacred texts as a heart-to-heart conversation with the Divine. Fr Thomas Keating, Trappist monk and pioneer of the global Centering Prayer movement, died in October last year, at the ripe age of 95. He dedicated much of his life to the renewal of the Christian contemplative tradition, and his legacy is an immense body of wisdom teachings and a worldwide community of practice.

It seems timely to connect in with this lineage, and to explore the experiential knowledge and the core ideas he developed as a framework for the practice of Centering Prayer. The group will be facilitated by Liz Day, who has been practising centering prayer for 16 years. During this time she has offered and taken part in many workshops, groups and retreats on centering prayer and the Christian contemplative tradition, and she has studied with national and international teachers, including Fr Thomas. Each session will include a period of silent meditation in the tradition of Centering Prayer – but you are of course welcome to follow a different meditation practice if you have one. The 8-weeks will be loosely structured around the following topics: 1. True Self, False Self and the Human Condition2.
The Nature of Grace and the Presence of Christ 3. Accessing our Basic Core of Goodness4. Divine Love and Spiritual Transformation5. Spiritual Community6. Spiritual Practice7. The Beatitudes8. Living in the Spirit This learning journey is offered on a gift basis - pay what feels right for you. We are asking for a £20 payment up front as a token of commitment and to reserve your place - this can be revised - up or down - towards the end of the 8 weeks. I highly recommend this 19-minute video tribute, featuring Fr Thomas reflecting on his life and imminent death:  A Life Surrendered to Love
