Storytelling Behavior Analysis Using Narrative Science

Arguably behavior analysis has some of the most amazing outcomes of human behavior change… ever. Yet, we’re over 100 years into this as a community with so many stories that haven’t been heard at the scale required to inspire and motivate change. This workshop will first explore the role of storytelling in the practice of behavior analysis (e.g., Let Me Hear Your Voice). I will then provide a rationale for how to use story-telling within the current behavior analysis climate and culture, including a brief overview of current conceptual and methodological understandings of the role of narrative in behavior analysis and science at large. Participants will then spend approximately 2 hours working collaboratively with other workshop attendees to create a pathway to storytelling that is related to their personal, professional or organizational goals.

Three (3) Type-2 BACB® CEUs will be available. *RYANO, LLC is an Approved Continuing Education (ACE) (# OP-19-3037) provider and The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (“BACB”) does not sponsor, approve or endorse RYANO, LLC, the materials, information or sessions identified herein. Target Audience: This is an introductory workshop. Ideal participants include: Students of behavior analysis & RBT®s* Leadership staff of behavior analytic service providers Professors of behavior analysis Board Certified Behavior Analysts® (BCBA®s, BCBA-D®s, & BCaBA®s) Parents or recipients of behavior analytic services** *Actively enrolled students and RBT®s receive a discounted rate* **Parents or active recipients of services will be asked for some more information regarding their comfort of sharing their personal journey - what you submit and our interactions will not be shared with anyone.
I want to make sure that I’m careful in how I pair people that are outside formal behavior analysis training programs to ensure success. As an attendee, be ready to explore a few areas: Your personal, professional, or organizational goals related to behavior analysis service delivery or dissemination How to translate your passion of behavior analysis into final products that are real, ethical, and honest stories in one of these three mediums: written, audio, video An openness and willingness to learn new things and explore them with passionate like-minded people About the Presenter:   Hey, I'm Ryan. I usually go by Ryan O or RYANO. I hail from northern Nevada in the grungy, yet surprisingly classy, (and newly renovated) Reno, Nevada. I like my climate like I like my data: evolving, uncompromising, and progressive.
I am a master of science; that is, I have an M.S. in Applied Behavior Analysis, however, my interests have grown to include many other areas, including entrepreneurship and capturing perspectives and stories through various mediums. These interests and skills have allowed me to work with a lot of great people. I've started three businesses, started numerous active joint venture agreements, a behavioral think-tank, the Why We Do What We Do podcast, the Controversial Exchange podcast, a professional development movement called NextGen, helping organizations that support people with Intellectual Disabilities, to list a few. 2018 was a "gap" year where I created content for behavioral science enthusiasts as I prepared for my next big venture (TBA in 2019). I focus outside this role on building a community of thought leaders and doers to create content that increases the transparency of behavior analytic technologies with the hopes of creating a platform that truly saves the world.
My interests are all over, from artificial intelligence and machine learning applications to the theory and philosophy behind why we do what we do. In my spare time you can find me consuming social media, creating memories with loved ones, prepping/climbing a giant mountain, or walking around with my camera in my hand (and, occasionally, all simultaneously). Connect with me on most all social platforms via @TheDailyBA or personally @theRyanoDotCom and let me know what drives you to pursue the Behavior Analysis vision. Suggested Materials (Not Required): A charged phone with any relevant social media apps you may consider using to share your stories A charged laptop Expectations: Be ready to meet new people. But don’t worry. I’ll do as much as I can to make this comfortable and engaging, starting with pairing people that share like-minded goals with each other so that you can brainstorm with like-minded people at the event.
There will be structured activities and brainstorming that you complete with a group. I may ask for phones to be away if they become a distraction.
