Plant Science Masterclass How Plants Sense World

Calling all Year 12 science students. Our Plant Science team at the University of Nottingham are hosting a Gatsby Plant Science Masterclass at our Sutton Bonington Campus.  The classes will run in two parts: one delivered in November 2019, and the second in January 2020. The classes will focus on: 1) How plants make sense of their environments: an introduction to plant stress and sensing 2) How plants make sense of their environments: examining plants under stress Farmers and breeders are increasingly having to deal with changing environmental conditions, including weather unpredictability, increases in the frequency of drought and/or fluctuations in temperatures amongst others. Scientists researching arable crops are therefore working to understand how plants respond to stress, and how we can better understand the stress-response so that plants that can cope with various stressors can be bred and grown in the field.

These two masterclass sessions will provide students with the opportunity to understand how scientists go about doing this work, and will gain insight into working in a lab through practical activities.  Participants will have the opportunity to conduct experiments in our laboratories over two sessions. In the first session, participants will learn about plant sensing, and will set up their own experiments. In the second session, we will examine how the plants have fared, and what their reactions tell us about coping with stress. These sessions will be run by Dr Guillermina Mendiondo in a laboratory on our Sutton Bonington campus. Refreshments will be provided.  Please book onto both sessions.
