Creme European Launch Putting Engaged Scholarship Work

‘Engaged scholarship’, ‘impact’ and ‘engagement’ are vogue terms, but how do they work in practice? Academics and practitioners explore the practicalities of conducting engaged research and reflect on their involvement in ongoing collaborations that focus on work and enterprise (particularly in minority groups). We define ‘projects’ as individuals, initiatives and institutions with a sustained commitment to using social science research to address societal challenges. ‘Partners’ encompass scholars and non-academics involved in collaborative work. And, for this workshop, we reflect on the ‘progress’ of partners involved in engaged research centres and initiatives. We have got an incredible line-up of speakers for this event, including the following acclaimed academics: Professor Robert Kloosterman, Professor Mark Hart, Dr Maria Villares, Professor Daniel King and Professor Julia Rouse  Programme: April 3rd 12:30 Registration                           13:00 Lunch                                        Workshop Day 1                               13:45 Keynote:  Prof Robert Kloosterman (University of Amsterdam) Mixed Embeddedness: Twenty Years Later 14:30 Prof Monder Ram (CREME, ABS) and partners ‘Productivity from Below’: Working Collaboratively with Microbusinesses This session presents an innovative new ESRC-funded project led by CREME and involving a range of non-academic partners.

They outline how they will work together to develop evidence-based solutions to productivity challenges in microbusinesses in the West Midlands 15:30 Break and refreshments 16:00  Dr Maria Villares, University of Southampton, Deputy Director of the Social Impact Lab, and CREME Associate Fellow Embedding engagement and social impact in the curriculum and employability offer in higher education: insights, challenges and opportunities This presentation explores how engagement and social impact activities are embedded in the curriculum at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, its main challenges and opportunities. Dr. Villares discusses the Social Impact Lab’s (SIL) (Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Southampton) mission and programme of activities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.  The SIL’s activities aim at nurturing research and leadership skills for an engaged curriculum, in order to foster sensitivity towards working with community partners, and ‘making a difference’ amongst students.
16:45: Closing comments   April 4th Workshop Day 2                               10:00 Prof Julia Rouse (Centre for Decent Work and Productivity, Manchester Metropolitan University) Collectively Becoming Activist Scholars: How Philosophy, Accountability and Feminist Collectives are Shaping Research Practice in the Sylvia Pankhurst Gender and Diversity Research Centre Prof Rouse examines the themes of philosophy, accountability and transformational potential, and then compare the approaches ‘Engaged’ and ‘Activist’ Scholarship. The work of the ‘Sylvia Pankhurst Gender and Diversity Research Centre’ is drawn on to illustrate these themes 10:45 Prof Daniel King (Co-director for the People, Work and Organisational Practice Centre, Nottingham Trent University) 11:30 Break and refreshments 12:00 Prof Mark Hart (Deputy Director, Enterprise Research Centre [ERC], ABS) Alchemy of Small Business Growth: from econometric modelling to designing impactful peer-to-peer learning programmes for small business leaders Prof Hart explains how his and the ERC’s research on growth and productivity inform a whole suite of small business support programmes at the Aston Centre for Growth 12:45 Closing remarks 13.00 Lunch
