Business Breakfast Sustainable Palm Oil

The Future Economy Network is delighted to announce we will welcome representatives from Bristol Zoological Society, Marks and Spencer, and our subscribers University of the West of England to speak at this event to discuss problems associated with unsustainable production of palm oil & increasing awareness & positivity of sustainable palm oil. Amy Staff, BSc Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Science Student at University West of England Join Amy and delve into the story of palm oil. This talk will discuss the history and properties of this versitile oil-seed crop, currently used in 1/2 of all supermarket products. Discover the problems associated with unsustainable production, but why supporting sustainable palm oil (and not a boycott) is the answer. Amy will also be speaking about her successful lobby to get both UWE, it's Students' Union and HEI's across the country to commit to using only RSPO certified palm oil, as well as Dr Farnon Ellwood's research working to improve the biodiversity of oil palm plantations in Malaysia.

Katie Major, Conservation Psychologist and Campaigns Manager at Bristol Zoological Society Bristol Zoological Society is committed to helping shift the demand from non-sustainable to sustainable palm oil and believes that all products containing sustainable palm oil should be clearly labelled. This talk will discuss the need for clear labelling of sustainable palm oil and positive public stories on sustainable palm oil. It will also touch upon the work undertaken by Bristol Zoological Society, particularly on the Supporting Sustainable Palm Oil campaign and work in Papua New Guinea. Hazel Culley, Senior Sustainability Manager at Marks and Spencer, will be covering Marks and Spencer’s history and future with sustainable palm oil. Hazel will cover why they use palm oil, why they believe that removing palm oil is not the right answer, and finally, the length that Marks and Spencer go to to ensure that the supply chain is fully sustainable.
