Bishopsgate Institute opens its doors for Open House, the city-wide festival of architecture and design. This is a unique opportunity to come and explore our beautifully restored and historic Grade II* listed building. Founded in 1894, Bishopsgate Institute was one of three major public buildings designed by architect Charles Harrison Townsend (1851-1928), the other two being the Whitechapel Gallery and the Horniman Museum. It combines elements of the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau styles, along with the typically Victorian, and Townsend’s originality can be seen throughout the building from the decorative façade and roof turrets to the grandeur of the Great Hall. Tours From 10:00, every half an hour, you'll be able to take part in tours of our Great Hall, Board Room, and Library, or simply go and explore yourself.

There will be information and presentations in all of our rooms with architectural and historical facts about the Institute, and plenty of our staff to guide you around. The last tour will be at 16:00, and last admission to the building at 16:30. Eye Spy There will be a free Eye Spy activity which guides you to five of the most intriguing parts of the building. If you find all five you will go into the draw to WIN a place one our courses. Café Our Great Hall will also contain a pop-up café for if any visitors who are making a day of exploring the city and needing a moment to rest and refuel. We'll have information on our regular events and courses for you to take away. Image by Richard Kearns.
