St Andrews, United Kingdom
Coach Tour from Glasgow. Briglands Briglands was a modest Georgian country house near Rumbling Bridge that, between 1899 and 1908, was extensively remodelled by Sir Robert Lorimer; the work was commissioned by James Avon Clyde, an Edinburgh advocate and later judge, Lord Clyde. Peter Savage, in his book, Lorimer and the Edinburgh Craft Designers, writes: "At Briglands [Lorimer] took an old but spoilt building and gave it new life". In addition to work on the house itself, the gatehouse is based around one of Lorimer's favourite themes, Queen Mary's bath house at Holyrood. The owners, Mr. and Mrs. Multon have kindly agreed to show us round the house and gardens and provide us with morning coffee. Rufflets Hotel We will stop off for a soup and sandwich lunch at the delightful Rufflets Hotel, just outside St.
Andrews. Built in 1924 by Mrs Anne Brydon Gilroy, the widow of a prominent Dundee jute baron, it was designed by Dundee architect, John Donald Mills. In 1952 the house was converted into a hotel, one of the first country house hotels in Scotland; it is still run by grandsons of two of the original founders of the business. St Andrews Euan McCulloch, one of our former vice-chairs, will lead us on an approximately two-hour walk round St. Andrews. Among other things, the walk will take in medieval St. Andrews, with a visit to St.Leonard’s Chapel—a collegiate chapel conservatively restored from near ruin by Ian Lindsay, the Renaissance—the 16th Century onwards St. Mary’s College and the 19th Century “New Town” developments—Madras College and the exceptional stained glass of Holy Trinity Church. We hope to end the walk in an 18th century house with a lovely restful garden owned by one of our members. Cost: £30.00 per person, to include coach travel, all entries, morning coffee and lunch. Pick up: the bus stance on North Hanover Street across the road from the side entrance to Queen Street Station Time: 9am sharp To book your place, contact the National Office. firstname.lastname@example.org 0131 557 0019
